Foundations

Agile Planning
Planning as a continuous, adaptive activity that occurs at multiple horizons and is refined as learning occurs, rather than a one-time upfront event.
Planning Onion
The idea that planning happens at many levels — day, iteration, release, product, portfolio, strategy — each with a different horizon and detail.

The value is in the planning activity and shared understanding; plans are expected to change as reality unfolds.

Estimation

Relative Estimation
Sizing items by comparing them to each other rather than estimating absolute time, which humans do more reliably.
Story Points
A unit of relative size that combines effort, complexity, and uncertainty, decoupled from any individual's speed.
Ideal Time vs. Elapsed Time
Ideal time is focused work time without interruptions; elapsed (calendar) time includes delays and other work.
Fibonacci Scale
A sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21) used for points; growing gaps reflect increasing uncertainty in larger items.
Planning Poker
A consensus technique where team members privately choose estimates and reveal simultaneously, discussing differences to converge.
Triangulation
Checking an estimate by comparing the item to several previously sized reference stories.
Reference Story
A well-understood, already-sized story used as a baseline for estimating others relatively.
T-Shirt Sizing
A coarse relative estimation (S, M, L, XL) useful for large or early-stage items before finer estimates.
Re-estimating
Estimates are updated only when understanding materially changes, not to reconcile with actual time spent.

Velocity

Velocity
The average number of story points a team completes per iteration, used to forecast how much it can do in future iterations.
Yesterday's Weather
Using recent actual velocity as the best predictor of near-term capacity.
Velocity Range
Forecasting with a range based on historical highs and lows to reflect natural variability.
Capacity Planning
Adjusting a plan for holidays, leave, and other commitments so an iteration's plan is realistic.

Release Planning

Release Plan
A plan mapping which features or stories will be delivered across upcoming iterations, based on velocity and priority.
Fixed Scope vs. Fixed Date
Plan by dividing scope by velocity to find a date, or fit scope to a fixed date — two ways to forecast a release.
Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
The smallest release that delivers and validates value, focusing early scope on what matters most.
Burndown Chart
A chart tracking remaining work over time, showing whether the team is on pace to finish.
Burnup Chart
A chart showing completed work against total scope, making scope changes visible alongside progress.
Cumulative Flow Diagram
A chart showing work in each state over time, revealing bottlenecks and WIP buildup.

Iteration Planning

Iteration Planning
Selecting and committing to the highest-priority ready items for the next iteration and defining a goal.
Task Breakdown
Decomposing committed stories into tasks to build a shared plan and surface hidden work.
Commitment vs. Forecast
Treating the iteration plan as a forecast the team believes it can meet, based on capacity and history.

Managing Uncertainty

Cone of Uncertainty
The principle that estimates are widest early and narrow as work proceeds and learning accumulates.
