Flow Foundations
- Agile Release Train (ART)
- A long-lived team of Agile teams (50–125 people) that delivers value on a Program Increment cadence within a value stream.

Metrics
- Flow Metrics
- SAFe's six flow measures: flow distribution, velocity, time, load, efficiency, and predictability.
- Flow Velocity
- The number of items completed in a time period — throughput — indicating delivery rate.
- Flow Time
- The elapsed time from when work starts until it is delivered, including active and wait time.
- Flow Load
- The amount of work in process; excessive load lengthens flow time and reduces efficiency.
- Flow Efficiency
- The ratio of active work time to total flow time, revealing how much time is waiting versus working.
- Flow Predictability
- How reliably the ART meets its planned business value, indicating stability of flow.
- Flow Distribution
- The mix of work types (features, enablers, defects, risks) in the backlog, balanced to sustain flow and health.
Analysis
- Cumulative Flow Diagram
- A chart showing work in each state over time, exposing WIP buildup and bottlenecks.
- Bottleneck Analysis
- Identifying the constraint that most limits ART throughput and focusing improvement there.
- Value Stream Mapping
- Mapping the ART's delivery steps to find delays, handoffs, and waste to remove.
- Wait Time vs. Process Time
- Distinguishing idle time from active work time to target the largest sources of delay.
