Role

Product Owner (PO)

The team-level role in SAFe responsible for the team backlog and for maximizing the value the team delivers each iteration.

PO and Product Management

The PO works at the team level while Product Management owns the program backlog and vision; they partner closely.

Voice of the Customer

The PO represents customer and business needs to the team as clear priorities and requirements.

PO Availability

An engaged, available PO is essential; absence is a common cause of team ineffectiveness.

SAFe Context

Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

A framework for scaling Lean and Agile across the enterprise using Agile Release Trains and PI cadence.

Agile Release Train (ART)

A team of teams that delivers value on a Program Increment cadence; the PO's team is part of one.

Program Increment (PI)

A timebox (8–12 weeks) in which the ART delivers value, giving the planning and integration cadence.

Backlog

Team Backlog

The prioritized list of stories and enablers the team will work on, owned by the PO.

Backlog Refinement

Ongoing detailing, estimating, and ordering so the top of the backlog is ready for iteration planning.

Prioritization (WSJF)

Ordering work by Weighted Shortest Job First to maximize economic value and flow.

Enablers

Backlog items for exploration, architecture, or infrastructure that support future value.

Stories

User Story

A short, user-focused description of functionality with acceptance criteria.

INVEST

Good stories are Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimable, Small, and Testable.

Acceptance Criteria

Conditions a story must meet to be accepted, guiding development, testing, and PO acceptance.

Story Splitting

Breaking large stories into smaller, valuable, testable slices that fit in an iteration.

Execution

Iteration Planning

The PO presents priorities and clarifies stories so the team commits to a valuable iteration plan.

Iteration Review

The team demonstrates the increment and gathers feedback to steer the backlog.

Story Acceptance

The PO verifies completed stories meet acceptance criteria and Definition of Done.

PI Planning

The cadence-based event where teams plan the PI; the PO helps prepare and clarify priorities.

Value

Business Value

The basis for prioritization — ROI, customer impact, and risk reduction.

Incremental Value

Delivering the smallest valuable slice first and building on it iteratively.

Measuring Outcomes

Using feedback and metrics to confirm delivered work achieved its intended value.
