Role

Business Owner
A key stakeholder with primary business and technical responsibility for governance, compliance, and return on investment for an Agile Release Train.
Accountable for Value
Business Owners are accountable for the value the ART delivers and actively participate to ensure it.
Small Group
Typically a handful of senior stakeholders per ART who can make decisions and remove impediments.
Engaged, Not Absent
Effective Business Owners are actively involved throughout the PI, not just at planning.

SAFe Context

Agile Release Train (ART)
A team of teams that delivers value on a Program Increment cadence; Business Owners steward its value.
Program Increment (PI)
A timebox (8–12 weeks) in which the ART delivers value and which sets the cadence.
Lean-Agile Mindset
The beliefs and behaviors Business Owners model to support agile ways of working.

PI Planning

Participating in PI Planning
Business Owners attend PI Planning to provide context, priorities, and decisions.
Business Context Briefing
Sharing the current business context and priorities so teams plan effectively.
Assigning Business Value
Collaboratively rating PI objectives (1–10) with teams to align on what matters most.
Reviewing Draft Plans
Engaging in the management review to adjust scope and resolve issues before final plans.
Confidence Vote
Business Owners observe and support the teams' confidence vote on the plan.

Supporting Execution
Staying engaged to answer questions, make decisions, and remove impediments during the PI.
Removing Impediments

Business Value Scoring
The practice of rating objectives to align teams and later measure achievement.
Measuring Outcomes
Using PI objective achievement and metrics to assess the value delivered.
